Dear Friends, Scholars, and Supporters,
Welcome to the Estevanico Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and advancing the extraordinary legacy of Estevanico of Azemmour—one of history's most remarkable yet overlooked explorers.
Nearly five centuries ago, Estevanico, a Moroccan from the historic city of Azemmour, embarked on a journey that would forever shape the history of North America. Long before the American frontier was settled, he traversed vast regions of what are now the southwestern United States, serving as an explorer, guide, linguist, diplomat, and cultural intermediary. His courage, resilience, and ability to build trust across cultures transformed him into one of the earliest bridges between Africa, the Islamic world, Indigenous nations, and the emerging European presence in the Americas.
The story of Estevanico is inseparable from the enduring friendship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States. In 1777, Morocco became the first nation in the world to recognize the independence of the United States, initiating what remains the oldest continuous diplomatic relationship in American history. Decades before that historic recognition, Estevanico had already laid a human foundation for dialogue and discovery through his remarkable travels across the American Southwest. His life symbolizes the deep historical connections that unite our two nations.
The Estevanico Foundation was established to ensure that this remarkable legacy is no longer forgotten. Our mission is to preserve historical truth, promote scholarly research, and inspire future generations by sharing the story of a man whose contributions transcend national boundaries and cultural identities.
We believe that history has the power to unite people. By illuminating Estevanico's journey, we celebrate the shared values of curiosity, courage, perseverance, mutual respect, and intercultural understanding.
